Charitable Journeys: Ryan McNeil
From NFL player to philanthropic leader and entrepreneur, Ryan McNeil has always been driven by a commitment to giving back. Whether through mentoring athletes, supporting education, or pioneering sports technology, McNeil’s impact is felt across multiple fields. As Founder and CEO of SportsID, Inc., he is also reshaping sports management through innovative technology solutions.
Growing up in Florida, McNeil learned the value of generosity from his parents despite being an only child. His early involvement in community causes—like the March of Dimes and nursing home outreach—instilled a lifelong commitment to philanthropy. His philosophy is that giving is about creating opportunities, not just making donations.
McNeil’s NFL career took his giving to new heights. By 1996, just a few years into his career, he’d launched his donor-advised fund (DAF), becoming an early adopter of this model. Through his work with United Charitable and Athletes Charitable, McNeil has helped athletes use their platforms for impactful giving, believing that philanthropy should be both strategic and visible.
“I want to show people that giving back isn’t a burden—it’s a privilege,” he says. One of McNeil’s biggest passions is mentoring young athletes and encouraging them to use their resources and influence to make a difference. He emphasizes the importance of visibility in philanthropy, knowing that athletes inspire others to do the same when they engage with their communities.
At SportsID, Inc., McNeil is merging sports with technology, helping kids understand the data behind the games they love. He’s also working on initiatives combining sports and technology to foster physical activity and intellectual curiosity, teaching kids how data can help them become better athletes.
Whether through his donor-advised fund, mentoring, or pioneering new ways to engage with sports and technology, McNeil’s focus remains on creating lasting impact. As both a philanthropic leader and a tech innovator, he continues to inspire others to give back and think differently about how they can make a difference. For McNeil, giving back is more than an obligation—it’s a way of life.
