That’s why we are proud to support ReTreeUS, one of our fiscally sponsored programs dedicated to planting orchards in schools and public spaces across New England. This initiative is transforming the way students connect with nature and their food while fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.

The ReTreeUS Mission

ReTreeUS is on a mission to inspire generations of food growers, environmental stewards, and problem solvers through experiential education in orchards and gardens. By engaging students in hands-on learning, ReTreeUS cultivates a deep appreciation for the environment and healthy living.

Meet Richard Hodges

Leading this impactful program is Richard Hodges, the founder and program manager of ReTreeUS. Richard’s journey as an outdoor educator and farmer spans locations from Maine and New Hampshire to California and Costa Rica. His passion for creating school orchards stems from a desire to empower young people to grow their own food sustainably and care for the planet.

With a degree from the University of Vermont, Richard is a certified Permaculture Designer and Master Gardener, as well as a graduate of Maine’s Sustainable Food System Leadership Institute. His expertise and enthusiasm drive ReTreeUS’s mission forward, inspiring both students and communities.

Since its inception, ReTreeUS has made remarkable strides:

100 Educational Orchards: The program has planted 100 orchards, providing students with real-world gardening experiences.

30,324 Students Impacted: Over 30,324 students have participated in ReTreeUS programs, encouraging a love for nature and sustainability.

143,146 Pounds of Fruit Harvested: An estimated 143,146 pounds of fruit have been harvested, promoting healthier eating habits in local communities.
